To improve the state of risk water objects in Latvia, in 2020, a collaborative project named “Implementation of Latvian river basin management plans to achieve good surface water status” was initiated, involving 19 organizations under project number LIFE18 IPE/LV/000014 (LIFE GOODWATER IP).

The project is implemented with the financial support of the European Union’s LIFE programme for environment and climate, the State Agency for Digital Development, and the Society Integration Foundation using funds allocated from the Latvian state budget by the Ministry of Culture.

Currently there are 164 at-risk water bodies in Latvia, including 89 rivers and 75 lakes, and key challenges include pollution from plant nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus compounds leading to eutrophication) and alterations to the banks and beds of watercourses.
