This nest is particularly interesting because it is built in a spruce, a tree type rarely chosen by White-tailed Eagles for nesting; at the time of discovery, it was only the fourth known nest in a spruce in Latvia. Approximately half of all White-tailed Eagle nests are built in pines, while the remaining third are in aspens, birches, alders, and oaks.  Since 2015, the nest has fallen three times after the breeding season, but the eagles have always rebuilt it.  The species is included in the list of specially protected species in Latvia. The White-tailed Eagle is a water associated diurnal raptor that nests in various types of forests. Its diet primarily consists of fish and birds, and less frequently small mammals; in winter, it becomes a more pronounced scavenger.
