The black stork nest has been available for online observation on the Dabasdati<\/em> portal since 2015; more information on the events can be found here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to information available to M\u0101ris Strazds, the location of this nest has been known since 2003. Based on its size and other characteristics, the original nest is estimated to have been built in 2001. Since 2006, the nest has been inspected almost every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chicks were present in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023; however, a relatively large proportion of them died (from starvation) either near the nest or in the nest itself. The main reason is the high density of drainage ditches in the surrounding area, which, depending on winter and spring conditions, can create a misleading impression for storks that food resources will be abundant. During the breeding season, conditions may change very rapidly, resulting in insufficient food for feeding the chicks. Successful breeding is known with certainty for 2011, as one juvenile from that year was recorded in the area in 2019, when the natural nest had already collapsed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camera traps that were installed at this nest site for several years have also recorded a bird ringed in Lithuania (a young female). In early February 2020, after the original nest had fallen, an artificial nest platform was constructed at the same location (and height) as the natural nest\u201414.3 m above ground\u2014by J\u0101nis \u0136uze, M\u0101ris Strazds, and SIA \u201cR\u012bgas me\u017ei\u201d forest ranger Oskars Taupmanis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The live-streaming system at the nest was established in early 2024 by J. \u0136uze and J\u0101nis Rudz\u012btis, with the participation of representatives of SIA \u201cR\u012bgas me\u017ei,\u201d Edmunds Ra\u010dinskis and O. Taupmanis. During the first streaming season, black storks visited the nest; however, a stable pair did not form and breeding was not initiated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, similarly to 2024, a single bird intermittently occupied the nest, but breeding did not occur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The estimated population size in Latvia is 85\u2013140 breeding pairs. The primary diet of the black stork consists of fish, but it also feeds on amphibians and other small animals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
