The nest we are observing of cameras is located on the territory of SIA “R\u012bgas me\u017ei”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Latvia, the Eurasian eagle-owl mainly nests on the ground near large tree trunks or roots, on hills or slopes. In rare cases, it nests in the old nests of other birds of prey or in abandoned buildings. They also use artificial nests. The nesting population in Latvia is 16\u2013146 adult individuals. “The nesting area of the Eagle owl came under scrutiny in 2022 thanks to an observation reported on dabasdati.lv. As later clarified by the reporter, the Eagle owl had been observed there earlier, but there is no precise information about it. The nesting area and its surroundings are a classic Eagle owl habitat, a sparse stand of old pine trees. Over the past year, the Eagle owl pair chose to build two known natural nests at the top of a hill and on a slope under the roots of a pine tree. During the Latvian Ornithological Society’s bittern nest project, three artificial nests were also installed in the area. After a nearly three-year acquaintance period, a pair of bitterns chose to inhabit one of them (visible on live stream) in 2025. Known nesting successes: two chicks hatched in 2022, three chicks hatched in 2023, no nesting in 2024, three chicks hatched in 2025, two chicks fledged. In this area Eagle owl research using GPS tracking devices began in 2022, when one young bird was fitted with a tracking device, but shortly afterwards met its end after suffering an electric shock from a nearby power line. In 2025, one young bird that had reached flying age was equipped with a tracking device and, at the time of writing in March 2026, is staying in Lithuania, in the vicinity of Joni\u0161kis,” reveals P\u0113teris Daknis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eagle owl (Bubo bubo) nest observations in Kurzeme have been available online on the Dabasdati portal since 2017 \u2013 more information about nesting history can be found here ( https:\/\/forums. dabasdati.lv\/viewtopic.php?p=237204#p237204 ). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The online system was installed at the eagle owl nest by J\u0101nis \u0136uze and J\u0101nis Rudz\u012btis on March 2, 2026. Data transmission via the 4G network is provided by LMT.
