In preparation for announcement of LIFE programme Climate Action sub-programme grant receivers, the latest LIFE programme publication summarizes the current accomplishments in the field of climate change mitigation.
The "LIFE and Climate change mitigation" brochure offers an overview of European Union climate policy and provides a number of best practice examples from more than 200 projects implemented in EU countries.
As emphasized in the foreword of the publication by Miguel Arias Cañete, the EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, since 1992, LIFE programme has helped mobilise more than 600 million Euros in favour of climate change mitigation and these investments have given substantial positive results. He also reminds that 20% of the EU budget for 2014-2020 programming period are dedicated to climate action, including 864 million Euros dedicated to financing LIFE sub-programme for Climate Action projects.
The 88-page brochure also includes interviews with non-governmental organisation and EC Climate Strategy Directorate-General representatives, with emphasis on future challenges of climate change. The Climate Action project examples are arranged into six chapters, according to their field - local and national action, energy, transport, agriculture and forestry, peatlands and wetlands, as well as a chapter that contains projects with business involvement. Every one of these chapters offers the reader valuable conclusions based on project implementation experience as well as outlines the areas future climate change mitigation projects should focus on.
LIFE is the EU's financial instrument for supporting environmental, nature conservation and climate action projects to improve environmental legislation implementation. Since 1992, LIFE has co-financed more than 4100 projects, contributing approximately 3,4 billion Euros to protection of the environment and climate.
